At Castle in the Air, we love to see it when our friends dream big. And that’s exactly what artist Tiffanie Turner is doing with her current show. Tiffanie—who is known in art circles as “papel SF”—has been coming to Castle in the Air for her crepe paper for years, and recently she’s used it to construct the gigantic blossoms on display this month at Rare Device in San Francisco.
Tiffanie is an architect as well as an artist, and “Heads” exhibits her skills in monumental-scale paper sculpture. The paper blooms are between two and three feet in diameter and made of lushly petaled layers. Each flower took her a week or two to make, and I resonated particularly strongly with what she says in her artist’s statement: “If it didn’t take a long time, you’re not doing it right.” If only it weren’t true!
It’s amazing to see what people can do with crepe paper—don’t miss this show!
