We've launched a new series of tutorials on our YouTube channel including this one by John McRae that teaches viewers how to make festive crepe paper party hats. I'm a now-amateur calligrapher. 30 years ago, for most of 5 years, I studied calligraphy at The Calligraphy Center on Cole St. in S.F. Those days a member of the Friends of Calligraphy; and when I moved to Berkeley for 2 yrs. I participated with Georgianna Greenwood in the the mailings of the Friends' newsletter (so long ago I can't recall what it was called). Thence, in L.A. for about 24 years I practiced as a free-lance calligrapher to the Beverly Hills cadre of entertainment people; mostly envelope-addressing,table-cards, occasionally asked to to the invitations, or broadsides/poems, etc. Now living in Kentfield, Marin County in a seniors' accommodation. I sometimes do personal Christmas cards; 2 yrs. ago that list was 86 cards, this year I made 3 dozen (nicer ones). I am a 24 year advanced Student of A Course in Miracles, which guideth my footsteps. It is good to see you are extant, and communicating Creativity.

What I love to find in Castles in the Air, is the unexpected. Last time I was in, there was a little dish with bronze vintage cording, in several metallic colors, behind the front desk. It would have been easy to miss but with the exception of my wandering eyes. I couldn't help imagine what fun I could have with this cord, although I wasn't actually sure how. since purchasing one little bundle, I started to paint 1" wooden beads like small planets and what I call galaxy balls with deep blue dyes and bronze leaf paints.

ReplyDeleteCastle in the air has the best classes I've ever been to. Right now I've been given a box of old crepe paper sheets. So old they have faded and water-stained edges, but I suspect they will make stunning crepe paper items like hats and flowers.

ReplyDeleteI've often envied the English simply for their devoted seriousness in donning amusing paper party hats for Christmas. Seems the festivity in the air brightens when people pop on a crepe paper chapeau! I've made several as gifts during the holidays, and made a few parties brighter because of them, but my fledgling skills could use a good polishing. There's more than meets the eye in the creation of a good meaning hat. Oh Castle sprites... please guide my entry to a spot in the class!
