Gearing up for Gnomevember

As our most recent Castle Crier announced, Gnomevember is National Novel Writing Month, and we at Castle in the Air are gearing up and gathering our creative energy to dive into this quickly approaching month of literary abandon!

"When creativity really takes off, though, is when we add our ideas to the mix. We already know our materials, and if we can trust our imagination and follow through with our ideas, then the sky's the limit. I think of artists as standing on the edge of a cliff. The artist knows that, as crazy as it sounds, they can fly if they can only muster the strength to throw themselves off, to go for it. Creativity is courage incarnate."

This excerpt belongs to an interview with Karima on the NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, blog. You can read the interview here

If you could use further encouragement to write your novel, the NaNoWriMo website offers much support. Do take a look, and join us this November as we muster our courage and take the leap.

Pirate & Hoopoe Wins a Gold Moonbeam Award

We announce with much excitement that Moonbeam Children's Book Awards has recognized Pirate & Hoopoe with the Gold Medal Spirit Award for Imagination!

Following in the tradition of Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe, Pirate & Hoopoe is a 21st century adventure novel for readers of all ages. The book features twenty-two watercolor plates by Castle founder Karima Cammell, which served as the basis for the story written by her father, Diarmid Cammell. With its embossed cover, patterned endpapers, exquisite layout, and  full page watercolor illustrations; Pirate & Hoopoe upholds the tradition of the classic adventure novel with a rare artfulness in today's book world. Moonbeam created the Spirit Award as a way to recognize inspired writing, illustrating, and publishing. Pirate & Hoopoe's win recognizes that it truly stands in a class of its own.

Many thanks to the Moonbeam Children's Book Awards which celebrate outstanding children's books and garner recognition for their creators, as well as encourage a life-long love of reading through the support of childhood literacy.

You can view Pirate & Hoopoe's title on the list of awardees along with the rest of the 2012 Award results here

German Paper Lanterns are Here!

We at Castle in the Air feel particularly jolly thanks to the colorful presence of our German paper lanterns. Every year we order them from our old supplier who has been making them for the past eighty years. Historically German children carried the lanterns lit through the streets on St. Martin's day which falls on November 11, and now they are made for a number of holidays and for general merriment. Made using vintage die cutting, our supplier has discontinued production of these colorful gems, thus this year's batch will sadly be our last. Come by our shop soon to pick one out for yourself before they are all gone!
We have a limited quantity of each style and are happy to fill phone orders at (510)204-9801.
